We have been learning and reading a lot about idioms, but this article explains a different side of them. To us idioms are easy to understand but to those who are learning how to speak English will find it difficult. The article points out that idioms have culture and background information in them. This article relates to what chapter four talks about "idioms". I definitely agree with the article because my mother learned how to speak English at an older age and so she sometimes gets confused with idioms people use. This affects the world, because in every language there are idioms and to be able to be a part of a culture you must understand their language.
Hi Jennifer! I think the article you posted was really interesting. I agree with you and the article that to sometimes be able to understand an idiom when people use it, some background information is required. Also, because of the different cultures all over the world, idioms will vary. I'm sure if I went to another country where their culture was different and they were using idioms, I would be in deep water!
ReplyDeleteI have family that struggle and get confused with idioms because they take them literally. I think this article is very interesting. It makes me think of the idioms in Spanish and how it can be confusing for people who are learning the language. Great article!
ReplyDeleteI can definitely agree with that! My family uses idioms all the time and have done so since I was little. So I was exposed to the understanding of how idioms worked at a young age. Awesome article!
